He went on to applaud the actress’s remarkable, albeit brief, career. “She achieved so much within the brief span that destiny allowed. The brevity of her life will always feel like an unhealed grievance. On her birth anniversary, I fondly remember Smita Patil.”

For those unfamiliar with the story, Smita Patil was married to Raj Babbar, and the couple had a son, Prateik Smita Patil (earlier known as Prateik Babbar). Tragically Smita passed away on December 13, 1986, at the young age of 31 due to complications during childbirth. Her career was cut short yet she left an indelible mark on Indian cinema with more than ten films releasing posthumously.

Recently, Prateik made headlines when he decided to drop his paternal surname and embrace his mother’s name, now known publicly as Prateik Smita Patil. Speaking to the media, the actor explained the reasoning behind the change. “Why should anyone be shocked? There is no reason to be shocked. I have taken my mother’s name. There is nothing to be shocked about. She is my mother after all,” he said.

Prateik’s admiration for his mother was also evident during his wedding to Priya Banerjee in February this year. He did not invite his paternal family to the ceremony. But the couple made sure to honor Smita’s memory by posing for photographs in front of her large portrait.
